Feb 15 2014: Flew from Toronto to Calgary to Yellowknife….very long day
after a long celebration the night before.
No major delays though, which is always a good sign! Got into YK late at night, and the town was
quiet for a Saturday…got settled into my hotel and passed out.
Feb 16 2014: Breakfast came early(0530), and in the form
of a vending machine chocolate bar and an apple juice…not the worst breakfast
I've had, but not the best either. Flight
was delayed leaving YK due to inclement weather at our first stop along the way
to refuel. Plans changed from going to
Cambridge Bay, NWT and we went to Kugluktuk (Coppermine River), NWT instead for
fuel. Furthered onto to Resolute Bay for
another fuel stop, and finally into Eureka at 1800 for dinner. 2 day commute to get to work, and something
like 20hrs in the air. Flew up in a
Beechcraft 1900D, more spacious and quicker than the Dash 8 we flew out on in
November.
Feb 17 2014: The labs needed to be opened up and essentially
restarted…that’s a work in progress. No
animal sightings yet, not even an arctic hare. Current temp is -40C without the wind chill; seasonally warm for this
location. Got some new people on
station, and some old favorites.
Feb 20 2014: The temp has dipped low, and it is having an adverse impact
on the labs and their ability to maintain their heat. Things have been progressing well though, we
are steadily completing our To Do list.
Feb 21 2014: Watched the mens hockey semi-final game of the Olympics today, and what
a stressful game that was!! Proud of the
boys for their defensive play. Looking
forward to Sundays Gold Medal game.
